Ever heard of kaiings? If you’re from a rural part of South Africa, chances are you have fond memories of this delicacy. If not, join us for an education on one of the most underrated and utterly delicious savoury treats to come from the traditional kitchen.

Following a short ride along the picturesque slopes of Simonsberg, we’ll descend towards the historical farmyard of Soetmelksvlei, which represents a time when life was simpler and craftsmanship was treasured. Here, farm foodie Louzel Steyn will teach you the art of making traditional kaiings.

Kaiings are crispy bits of lard or fat, rendered to perfection and served with lots of salt and a starch of choice. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll learn to make our own kaiings, as well as fresh farm bread to serve alongside.

After an exciting morning, a hearty lunch will be served at the Old Stables Restaurant.
